BIO
Martha learned to tat using a couple of books from
the local library almost 30 years ago. Through the years, she has submitted
original tatting patterns for publication in the Workbasket Magazine and
several Internet web sites. She is excited to share her designs with us
by teaching her first class at Tat Days 2006!
Class 1 with Martha Ess
Getting Creative with a Celtic Tatting Hat Ornament , Friday, 2:00 to 5:00
Needle & Shuttle,
Advanced,
Techniques & Project
HOMEWORK
Here is the homework.
Description
The Celtic style lends itself to design variations and is a good way to exercise your creativity. We will work the first section ahead of time as homework and then brainstorm together in class on the various forms the next section could take. Then on to the actual tatting. You may make your hat according to the pattern provided or work your own design variation.
Project
The class project will be a Celtic style tatted hat ornament. Size would range from around 2 1/4 inches in size 80 thread to 4 inches in size 10. The pattern is written for three colors, but you could use from 1 to 9 colors if you so choose.
Techniques
Celtic designing and tatting.
Skill Level
Intermediate. Must know how to make rings, chains, split rings.
Supplies
- Thread in a size you're comfortable with, see above for number of colors.
- At least two shuttles. Extra shuttles or bobbins will come in handy to cut down on rewinding when changing colors for the next round.
- The final round calls for working with two shuttles and balls. Some people find this easier to work with 4 shuttles.
Class 2 with Martha Ess
Introduction to Block Tatting with a Bunch of Little Animals....and a Hat, Saturday, 11:00 to 12:30
Shuttle, Intermediate, Techniques
Description
Block tatting consists of rows of closely spaced chains. Traditionally, it has been used to form solid square elements that add visual interest to edging and doily patterns. We will practice the block tatting technique, but use it to make whimsical small creatures. I'll also show some other useful techniques for your "tatting tool box" like down picots, dimple rings, and a new decorative join. |
 |
Project
For the class project, we will start with a frog, and time permitting, move on to your choice of cat or puppy. The class handout will include patterns for a flamingo, cat, puppy, frog, teddy bear, penguin, stegosaurus, and of course, a hat. In size 8 perle cotton, these range from 1 to 1 7/8 inch in size.
Techniques
Block tatting and other techniques for your "tatting tool box" like down picots, dimple rings, and a new decorative join.
Skill Level
Advanced beginner. You must know how to make rings, chains, use a second shuttle to throw off a ring from a chain. Familiarity with reading patterns is a plus.
Supplies
- Thread in assorted colors in a size you're comfortable with.
- Two shuttles.
- A crochet hook in the smallest size that will pull up your thread without fraying.
- Beads for eyes--Martha will bring some seed beads to share, but please bring your own if you need a larger size or certain color.

Reinventing the Wheel, Saturday, 1:30 to 5:00
Shuttle, Beginner & Intermediate, Techniques & Project
Description
The wheel is one of tatting's oldest motifs, dating back to the days when all patterns consisted of rings only. These antique patterns are lovely, but require an excessive amount of cutting and working in ends. In this class we will learn the split ring and single-shuttle-split-ring and how to use them to move from one motif to the next without a cut and tie.
Project
The class project will be a bookmark consisting of a strip of wheel motifs. Also, a bonus pattern in your handout will be a little hat made from a two-round wheel motif.
Techniques
Split ring and single-shuttle-split-ring and how to use them to move from one motif to the next without a cut and tie.
|
Skill Level
Beginner/basic level. Must know how to make rings, picots, joins.
Supplies
- Thread, one color, size 10 or 20 recommended
- Two shuttles
- Small crochet hook if you're not using shuttles with built-in hooks
Preparation
Bring two shuttles already
wound continuously (CTM).
On Time: As a courtesy to your teacher and your classmates, please arrive ON TIME to your scheduled classes. If you finish your project early, or would like additional time to visit, shop, or see the lace display, you may leave any class early.
