Byzantine Chain

Students will learn to apply basic 3-D chain making techniques to tatting by making rings and interlocking them during the construction process. The results will be the intricate Byzantine pattern, followed by a discussion of other applications and variations of the chain as it applies to tatting.

Students need to know how to make basic rings.

Students will make lots and lots of rings. Discussion will cover incorporation of beads and/or use of metallic threads.

Materials:
One color chain: 1 shuttle with #8 Perle Cotton or equivalent.
Multi-color chain: 6 shuttles with 6 colors of #8 Perle Cotton or equivalent and a small amount of white on a shuttle for the anchor ring.
A crochet hook will be useful to insert the thread when beginning the next steps as the chain is very compact.

Cable Chain

Students will learn to apply basic 3-D chain making techniques to tatting by making rings and interlocking them during the construction process. The results will be a basic cable chain followed by a discussion of other applications and variations of the chain as it applies to tatting.

Students need to know how to make basic rings.

Students will make lots and lots of rings. Discussion will cover incorporation of beads and/or use of metallic threads.

Materials:
One color chain: 1 shuttle with #8 Perle Cotton or equivalent.
Multi-color chain: As many shuttles with different colors of #8 Perle Cotton or equivalent as you want. Because you only need a small amount of thread for each link, you can also finger tat the rings.

Snowflake Variations

Students will make a 1-round snowflake using 2 shuttles. This is a good exercise in switching shuttles and using both for rings and chains. Class will also cover a variation on the snowflake which involves switching 2 elements in the pattern.

Students need to be comfortable making rings and chains and working with 2 shuttles.

Students will work rings, chains, pictos and joins and switching between shuttles.

Materials:
2 shuttles with the thread of your choice
Hook for joining
Beads are optional
